Les barques volen pel cel

Les barques volen pel cel
—Conversations between the brothers Pau and Enric Casals
Details
Especially during the final decades of his life, Pau Casals’ reputation and influence both in Catalonia and abroad would not have been the same without the personal and artistic support of his brother Enric Casals, who was sixteen years younger. Enric, a violinist and composer, orchestrated Pau Casals’ compositions for orchestra and cobla (a traditional Catalan ensemble), served as his assistant conductor, maintained a vital link between Pau and his homeland during his exile, and looked after his property and personal well-being.
It is said that when Enric was still very young, Pau returned home after a tour abroad. Enric’s reverence for his older brother was so great that he addressed him using the formal form of “you”. How does one cope with being the brother of a genius while pursuing the same profession?
The Boats Fly Across the Sky is a theatrical and musical production that explores the relationship between the two brothers, bringing into dialogue not only their different approaches to music but also their contrasting outlooks on life: Enric enjoys a stable family life with four children, while Pau has none; Pau acts as a father figure and mentor, while Enric puts his skills as an orchestrator at his brother’s service; Pau goes into exile and decides to stop making music in protest against fascism, while Enric remains in Barcelona, where he runs a music school; Pau believes in the power of art to change the world, while Enric is perhaps less convinced.
On stage, two grand pianos face each other. Seated at one is director and composer Xavier Albertí, who portrays Pau Casals. At the other sits writer and musician Jordi Lara, who gives voice to Enric’s thoughts.
The action begins with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. On the stage of the Palau de la Música Catalana, Pau Casals dismisses the musicians of the orchestra with whom he has been rehearsing. Pau and Enric —who is serving as concertmaster— are left alone, facing an uncertain future.
Is this the moment to settle old scores? To make plans together or go their separate ways? Jordi Lara is responsible for the original concept, dramaturgy and musical arrangements, and gives voice to the character of Enric Casals. Xavier Albertí directs the production and takes on the role of Pau Casals.
