Recovery of the Requiem by Melcior de Ferrer

Recovery of the Requiem by Melcior de Ferrer
Details
Melcior de Ferrer i de Manresa (Peralada, 1825 - La Bisbal d’Empordà, 1884) was a Catalan Romantic composar whose work includes sacred, stage, and instrumental music. Trained between Nice and Bologna, he maintained ties with figures such as Temistocle Solera, author of the libretto for his opera Giuditta.
In La Bisbal d’Empordà he played an active role in the town’s cultural life and supported the arrival of Joan Carreras i Dagas, precursor of the future cobla La Principal de la Bisbal. In 1881, Pope Leo XIII granted him the title of Baron de Ferrer in recognition of his dedication to sacred music. Among his works, the Requiem Mass for four voices and instruments stands out. Revised shortly before his death, it was premiered at his funeral at Barcelona Cathedral in 1884. Its revival by the Cor i Orquestra de la Passió (Cor Carreras Dagas), under the direction of David Granato, aims to restore his contribution to the history of Catalan music.
