Catalonia and the Wagnerian spirit

Details

Catalonia and the Wagnerian spirit share a sensibility marked by transcendence, myth, and the desire to go beyond. From the legendary Siegfried, which parallels the legend of Saint George, to the Montsalvat of Parsifal, evoking Montserrat, Wagner’s work found in Catalonia a land especially receptive and enthusiastic toward his artistic vision. The Liceu officially premiered Parsifal in 1914 with the tenor from Moià, Francesc Viñas, and this August the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra will visit the Palau, just one day before Saint Felix’s Day, the festival that hosts the important human tower event of the same name. Wagner, given his well-known megalomania, would possibly have interpreted the castells—had he known them—as a direct manifestation indebted to his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk, the total work of art that aspires to break through all limits of finitude.
