The laboratory bears its first public fruits. We will finally see how Sonatas Nos. 11 to 20 and the refinement of the String Quartets, op. 18 lead into these first two symphonies. The First might be described as an “amplified quartet”, while the Second begins to harness the physical force Beethoven had discovered in the Piano Sonata No. 8, “Pathétique”. Their proportions reveal a Beethoven who is still “writing for his time”, yet whose experimentation is already beginning to overflow the boundaries of Classical form.
