London Philharmonic & Gardner

London Philharmonic & Gardner
—Brahms and Sibelius
Details
Julia Fischer, one of the most admired violinists of her generation, joins the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme worthy of her virtuosity and musical sensitivity. Winner of the Yehudi Menuhin Competition at just twelve years old, the German violinist brings her artistry to one of the great works written for her instrument, Brahms’s Violin Concerto, a monumental score in which formidable technical demands coexist with extraordinary expressive intensity and a profound dialogue between soloist and orchestra.
The programme also turns to Jean Sibelius, a major figure in 20th-century music and one of the great architects of a symphonic voice deeply rooted in the Nordic imagination. His Symphony No. 5, one of the composer’s most celebrated works, unfolds a world of great breadth and evocative power, often associated with the landscapes and natural world of Finland.
At the helm of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the United Kingdom’s leading ensembles, Edward Gardner completes an evening that opens with the Prelude from Pau Casals’s oratorio El Pessebre, bringing Catalan musical heritage into dialogue with two landmark works of the great European repertoire.
