Thirteen years after performing Bach’s six Cello Suites at the Palau de la Música Catalana, Jean-Guihen Queyras once again takes on this true tour de force. He does so following a new recording of the complete cycle and with a new instrument, the 1707 “Kaiser” Stradivarius, made in Cremona. Six works in succession, a single cello and a performer who has played them hundreds of times around the world: an exceptional opportunity to hear Queyras return to one of the great monuments of the repertoire for his instrument.

Bach did not conceive these Suites as concert pieces and, for a long time, they were regarded primarily as studies. It was Pau Casals who, after discovering them as a teenager, played a decisive role in establishing them at the heart of the cello repertoire. More than three centuries after they were written, Queyras performs the complete cycle once again at the Palau, in a season that also celebrates the 150th anniversary of Pau Casals’s birth.
