Four composers and four distinctive musical worlds come together in a programme that explores the expressive richness of the orchestra, with Romanticism taking centre stage. The concert opens with the Overture by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, a 20th-century figure whose music is gaining increasing recognition in concert halls. Violist Sara Ferrández, one of the most outstanding performers of her generation, takes the spotlight in a rarely heard viola arrangement of Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto, a work of remarkable sensitivity and lyrical depth. Franz Liszt’s symphonic poem Les Préludes will bring drama and intensity to the evening, before the programme concludes with Johannes Brahms’s celebrated Hungarian Dances.
