Centenary of births
During the 2026-27 season, the Palau de la Música Catalana will also be a space of memory and gratitude. On the centenary of its birth, we will remember three key figures for understanding the musical life of our country in the 20th century and with special ties to the Palau: Rosa Sabater (1927-1983), Oriol Martorell (1927-1996) and Manel Cabero (1926-2022).
A pianist of exceptional sensitivity and interpretative intelligence, Rosa Sabater became one of the great ambassadors of the Catalan piano, with an international career that never distanced her from her commitment to the country's composers and institutions. Her artistic imprint, marked by rigor and expressive depth, continues to be a reference for new generations of performers. Unfortunately, her premature departure from the world did not allow us to fully enjoy one of the most important Catalan pianists in history.
Oriol Martorell, pedagogue and choral director, decisively transformed the Catalan choral movement of the second half of the 20th century. Founder of the Coral Sant Jordi in 1947, he made this formation a reference choral figure during some very difficult years in Catalan musical history. His tireless dedication to musical formation contributed to consolidating a demanding and rooted choral model, deeply connected to tradition and at the same time open to the world.
Manel Cabero, a key figure in the management and dynamization of culture in Catalonia, was the founder of the Madrigal Choir and worked to make music a shared and accessible asset, by promoting projects and initiatives that strengthened the country's musical fabric and reinforced the role of institutions as cultural drivers.
With this commemoration, the Palau wants to vindicate not only the memory of these three illustrious names, but also the values they embodied: excellence, commitment and service to the community.
