Two exceptional performers come together at the Petit Palau in a programme that journeys through some of the most fascinating landscapes of 20th-century music.

Dmitry Ishkhanov opens the concert with Debussy’s Estampes, three piano evocations full of colour, atmosphere and imagination. He then joins cellist Alexander Chaushian to perform Prokofiev’s Sonata in C major, Op. 119, a work that combines lyricism, irony and extraordinary rhythmic energy. After the interval, Ishkhanov takes on Nikolai Medtner’s concentrated and powerful Tragic Sonata, before cello and piano come together again in Alfred Schnittke’s Sonata No. 1: visceral, unsettling music charged with contrasts.

A recital in which to discover two musical personalities in a programme that moves from Impressionist delicacy to the intensity of 20th-century music.
