Sevilla and the Andalusian countryside of Spain in the early nineteenth century.

FIRST ACT:

The Real Fábrica de Tabacos de Sevilla’s square. Don José has just arrested the cigarette factory worker Carmen after she hurt her workmates with a razor. Carmen seduces Don José and gets away.

SECOND ACT:

In Lilas Pastias’ Tavern, just outside Seville. The smugglers and Carmen talk about teaming up, but she wishes to wait for Don José to arrive. Escamillo, the famous torero, who is interested in Carmen, appears and tries to seduce her. When Don José appears she proposes him to join the smugglers. He faces the army and injures his superior, becoming an outlaw man. They flee to Sierra Morena.

THIRD ACT:

In the smugglers’ shelter. Carmen is a little tired of Don José. She tries to see her own fortune using Tarot cards, and she sees her approaching death. Don José has to return with his dying mother. Escamillo comes and escapes with Carmen.

FOURTH ACT:

Back in Seville. Escamillo wins a corrida and expresses his love for Carmen. Don José, desperate because he cannot get Carmen to return with him, kills her.
