The Orfeó Català choirs will be giving performances throughout the day and there will be a new activity, a free choral singing workshop

On Sunday 21st June the Palau de la Música Catalana is to hold its traditional Open Day from 10am to 3pm, joining in with the International Music Day celebrations for the second year running. This is an event open to all which aims to repeat last year’s success, when more than 5,000 visitors were able to enjoy the facilities of this Art Nouveau building, a World heritage Site. The event, sponsored by Gas Natural Fenosa, is a very special chance too to hear the Orfeó Català choirs live, performing on the stage in the Sala de Concerts, as a complete ensemble and in small groups every half hour.

As a novelty, this year there is to be a choral singing workshop given by Josep Vila and Casañas, director of the Orfeó Català and the Cor de Cambra of the Palau, and Esteve Nabona, director of the Escola Coral and the Cor Jove of the Orfeó Català. The 80 participants in the workshop can enrol through this form; after the workshop they will also give a performance in the Sala de Concerts and so make their debut at the Palau de la Música Catalana.

During this open day, for 5 hours visitors will be able to go into the Sala de Concerts (stalls and circle), a major concert and event venue; to the Sala Lluís Millet, the meeting room for intermissions located on the first floor, with its spectacular balcony which will be open to visitors for the first time, so that they can enjoy its forest of columns, every one different and topped by stone capitals with floral motifs, a signature feature of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The Sala d’Assaig de l’Orfeó Català, the choir rehearsal room, will also be open to the public. This is a cosy, intimate room which contains the first stone to be laid of the Palau. As in recent years, this year the Centre de Documentació of the Orfeó Català will once more be offering guided tours of its facilities, located on the fifth floor of the Palau, where documents going back to the 12th century are kept.

Finally, the Bar del Foyer and the Restaurant Mirador del Palau will also be joining in with the celebration, with special prices on breakfast, vermouth and midday meals.

Open Day 2.0
Following the enormous popularity of last year’s event, this year’s Open Day will also feature on the social networks, where the Palau de la Música Catalana hosts a community of nearly 25,000 followers. With the tags #PortesObertesPalau and #DiadelaMúsica everybody will be invited to enjoy a fun day in the company of family and friends. Moreover, in the morning there will be a photographic competition on the social networks where the most original photograph will win a tasting menu for two at the Mirador del Palau restaurant, courtesy of Singularis.
